On Saturday, June 27, Chinatown will host a free community festival commemorating the anniversary of the establishment of “New Chinatown,” built when the original Chinatown enclave was taken over by the construction of Union Station. “New Chinatown” was dedicated in 1938 and became iconic heart of Chinatown which today encompasses 24 blocks. Hundreds are expected to gather at Central Plaza to enjoy entertainment including 50’s era music and dancing, casino games, Chinese acrobats and martial artists, and a narrated video presentation of historic photos. The event will also feature a salute to Chinese American war veterans, many of whom remember the 1950’s heyday of Chinatown after which the festival is themed.
The 71st Anniversary of New Chinatown will take place from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. in Central Plaza, at 943-951 N. Broadway Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Admission is free. For more detailed information, please call the Chinatown Business Improvement District at (213) 680-0243.
